Analysis below:
Newly promoted Athletico Goianiense are struggling greatly to cope with top-flight football and could
find themselves right back down in the 2nd division next year if their play doesn’t pick up dramatically.
Since an opening day home draw the visitors have lost 4 matches in a row and been outscored 8-3.
Last time out they were on the receiving end of a 3-1 pasting at home by Goais, a side that occupied
last place in the table and had yet to win this season going into that match. Another of their recent
losses came to Athletico Paranense, a side that that only avoided the drop by a 3-point margin last
season and who had also failed to pick up a win this season before meeting Goianiense.
Gremio Prudente aren’t off to the greatest of starts, but that may due to unkind scheduling as much
as anything else. Although the hosts are 1-2-2 to start the season, their losses came away to Avai
and defending champions Flamengo. They did have an improved away performance on the weekend,
managing a draw at Palmeiras, a side not in the habit of dropping points at home. Last season Gremio
Prudente were very strong at home, compling a 10-7-2 record with 35 goals scored and only 14
conceded. The early signs are that they’ll continue their strong home play this season, as in their 2
home fixtures thusfar they’ve demolished Athletico Mineiro 4-0 and came up with a 2-2 draw against
1st place Corinthians, the only time Corinthians failed to pick up a full 3 points so far this season.
